Reflection on sources

For most of my resources i used DISCUS and Ebsco Host. Bing and google did not have creditable and unbias sources for my project. The knowledge i have gained from this experience i will continue to use these resources for future projects. Also using the citation link helped me get my citations done quick and easy. Also the paraphrasing cite helped me so i did not have any plagarism in my blog posts and it also expanded my vocabulary having to find and think of different words and ways to use them.

Reflection on process

Throught this process of learning, researching and developing new ideas about my topic i have learned various things. Not just with my topic but also with how to do the actual blog. I learned how to find unbias and good resources for my findings and also how to even blog. It was hard finding my resources but using DISCUS it helped me extremely. In the beginning i did not know how to use this blogger in any way but now after doing this i have learned how to blog and i quite enjoy it and will most likely continue to.

Reflection on finding paragraphs

After doing my findings, I have learned now how social networkis and text messaging are affecting us but in many ways also beneficial. It is beneficial because it gives us a way to advertise and communicate all over the world. but it comes with affects, like sleep loss, anxiety, distraction, grades dropping and stress. Also creating a larger risk towards leading to drugs, alcohol, and sexual activities. What you post online can also affect how you can get a job in the workplace because now employers can ask for accounts and their passwords to see what you have posted. This is like on the commercials for those medicines to help us but they come with a long list of consequences that we should consider before taking. And thats like texting and networking because it gives us a way to communicate, update on latest news and gossip but it has consequences we must consider before enrolling in these activities.

Findings #3

Is over obsessive text messaging causing stress and sleep loss? Local doctors located in the Pittsburg area are starting to believe that hypertexting is leading to anxiety, sleep loss, distraction in school, failing grades and all stress. It is causing short and long term anxiety, meaning the short term anxiety is asking yourself "Are they gonna answer?" and the long term anxiety is staying up late at night and and making your daily activities less and less functional. Texting is not only causing physical damage but it is also affecting grades. Taking your mind and focus off your work and putting it towards the social media. This may eventually lead to mayhem with lack of physical interaction in physical and mental ways in the schools and home. (Keeley, Lauren. "Incessant teen texting causes health concern." Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Nov 2010. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09165/977391-114.stm. )

Findings #2

Is text messaging causing an uprise in the percent of teens who drink, do drugs, and are involved in sexual activities? Obsessive texting and networking can lead to the life of drugs, alcohol, and sexual activities. 19.8 percent of teens surveyed said that send over 120 text messages a day. 11.5 percent of teens in the survey said that they were spending more than 3 hours a day on networks. As time progresses these teens are at higher risk to get involved with drugs, alcohol, and sexual activities. Also, hypertexting and hypernetworking can lead for teens to display tendencies towards obesity and eating disorders because these networks and texting can bring down their self esteem, making them have the erge to change and "fit in with the crowd." We may not realize how bad the affects of texting and networking are now but in the future as technology increases to its full potential, their may not be a way to change. ( farrel, nick. "Texting and Facebook lead to sex, drugs and rock-n-roll." the inquirer. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Nov 2010. <http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1895193/texting-facebook-leads-sex-drugs-rock-roll?WT.rss_f=Home&WT.rss_a=Texting+and+Facebook+lead+to+sex%2C+drugs+and+rock-n-roll>. )

Findings #1

Is social networking and texting causing an increase in suicide? Statistics say that young teens who send over 120 texts a day are in higher risk for suicidal attempts. (Bramhill, Nick. "DISCUS." N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Nov 2010. <DISCUS.com>. ) People can have two personalities having a social network or phone to hide their identity. They can start uneccessary drama to other teens, leadin them to depression and feeling as if there is nowhere to turn because their ability to interact with their parents decrease, which leads to suicide. A young college student who attended Rutgers University recently killed himself because of a video that was posted up on Youtube with the young man and his boyfriend together. That is a perfect example of how the smallest act of posting something online can lead to a dramatic effect, resulting with a life taken.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #5

Quote: Needless to say, social media has forever changed the way society works, whether it’s the sharing of an idea, the communication of news, or the availability of a product or service. Society today is on the verge of a new way of existing that it’s never experienced before. As long as there is a person who wishes to express their opinion, share their music or art, or simply say hello to another human being in another country or culture, social media will allow them to do so.

Paraphrase: Social networking is changing how our world is working. We now can share ideas, communicate with people anywhere in the world, find out the latest news and gossip, or advertise a companys new product. Our world is increasing into the new unexperienced way the world say never witnessed before. there will always be people to state their opinion, get their music out there, or tell someone "hey" in a different place, and these networks are the reason why they can.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #4

Quote: Social networking services expand the pool of people we have the opportunity to meet to near limitless possibilities. We're no longer restricted to or rely on people in our neighborhood, church, or workplace to provide the interaction we desire.

Paraphrase: Social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube are broadening the amount of individuals we are eligable to communicate with endlessly. Society is no more hampered to relying on community members to meet the need to interact with people.

Quote, paraphrase and citation #3

Quote: Today's college students are constantly reminded that their extracurricular undergraduate experiences posted on the Internet can cost them employment opportunities.
The emergence and subsequent explosion of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in the past five years has led to an increase in employers heading to the web when perusing lists of potential employees.

Paraphrase: People in their 20's consistently are told that their immoral upperclassman involvement exposed onto Facebook and other social networks can eliminate the chance for job experiences. The evolution and consequent eruption of these networks in the last couple years is creating an incline for employers going to these networks and internet to see what applicants for the job are really 'clean' and not engaging into certain activities that can cause a bad reputation for the business.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #2

Quote: "The Internet has failed to turn us all into nerds. Despite the fears of some prognosticators in the World Wide Web's early days, we are not hunched over our keyboards, retreating to virtual worlds to escape reality, according to a new study published Wednesday [Jan. 25, 2006]. As a matter of fact, Americans are using the Internet and other modern communications tools to keep in touch with a wider assortment of friends, some of whom they meet in person more often because they can find them online." (Dallas Morning News) This article reveals that technological developments haven't replaced personal interaction and have actually strengthened personal ties, according to a study "released by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, a nonprofit group that explores the Web's effects on people."

Paraphrase: Social networking has deteriorated to create a society of "dweebs". In spite of the visionaries concern for the internet, leaving to believe we waste our time arched over our computers or laptops lingering around on the web. It is believed, from a study done in January 25, 2006, that teens and young adults are escaping actuality, and prefer our 3 dimensional virtual creation. the truth behind our reasons for accessing these networks a great deal is so we can stay in communication with our friends and/or family. These networks make it easier to get a hold of our friends in a more time quick way, and most of the time the virtual friends do meet up close in person. This shows that networks are not effecting face-to-face interaction among teen and young adults and it ascends the relationship more efficiently.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #1

Quote: "Because so many people in their teens and early 20s are in this constant whir of socializing--accessible to each other every minute of the day via cell phone, instant messaging and social-networking Web sites--there are a host of new questions that need to be addressed in schools, in the workplace and at home. Chief among them: How much work can 'hyper-socializing" students or employees really accomplish if they are holding multiple conversations with friends via text-messaging, or are obsessively checking Facebook?"

Paraphrase: The million dollar question now is, are teen and young adults being affected by via text messaging and social networking? Students and people in the business are always posting and sharing their personal lives on to these networks where a large amount of people are allowed to access your profile to see. It has came to the conclusion that, kids at school and home have not been able to achieve all their work, and may be risking their education and chances to acquire their full potential to bu successful. Are kids and young adults infatuation for Facebook, Twitter, and their cell phones becoming a conflict in society?

Wordle: text messaging and social networking

Premilinary links

http://wfxsearch.webfeat.org/wfsearch/search
This link is from DISCUS (South Carolina's Virtual Library). This is where i found my six articles concerning the affect and benefits on face-to-face interactions from via text messaging and social networking.
"The power of Facebook making connections easier than ever"
This article is about how the famous social network Facebook has made it easier to communicate and to "get things done" in a faster and easier way. It started off as a site for Harvard students to connect and interact online but it has spread over the last six years were people of all ages have joined and now has over 500 million users, the largest social network known.
"The greatest generation (of networkers)"
The article describes how young teens are becoming "obssessive" to texting and social networking. Texting and social networking has become a large part in our daily lives. A young boy was caught in class texting and when sent to the princibles office, he was caught texting once again while getting punished for texting in the first place.
"This is your space"
This article describes how private and public are blurring together and the young people's privacy are becoming public because of these networks and text messaging. These online networks are growing vastly in a short amount of time.
"Internet strengthens personal ties, pew study finds"
In this article, it is said by Crayton Harrison that these networks are benefiting us by strengthening our skills in all aspects. It has failed to turn us into nerds but its has us learning in different ways that we wouldn't have imagined.
"Always online--An eternity: Three days without contact"
This article describes that it is unknown that social networking is harming or benefiting us. They say that the percent of teens that would usually go to the mall for a date increased 5%; is this harming teens social interactions with their peers?
"Area police use Tweets to alert public"
Police are using Tweets to inform the public in their area of news or important activities that they should be informed about.

Expanding my knowledge

What I want to know about my topic is how via text messaging and social networking came about into our world thats growing remarkably fast in technology. Is text messaging and social networking causing conflict in society or is it benifiting us? Are people having a hard time recieving a job because of what they have wrote on their social network site? I also want see how text messaging and social networking is interfeering with face-to-face interaction during school and what conflicts and/or benefits it is having. If we are having troubles with our social networks and text messaging now, how will it be once we are in the year 2018? Are personal and proffessional relationships being affected because of social networking and text messaging? I would like to go more in depth with these questions and find out whether its beneficial or a conflict for society; if so, how will us, as a group do to change the problem?

Background knowledge

Before I began my research on my topic, i had some prior knowledge. People are beginning to use Facebook and Twitter to get news out, or to advertise. Facebook has only been out for almost about 9 months and it has over 300 million people registered to their network. Famous artists such as Justin Bieber was discovered on Youtube by other famous artist for many years, Usher. This shows how fast and how much of a big deal social networking is and how much it's inhancing society.

The story behind my choice

The reason why I chose this topic is because I am one of those individuals that are always text messaging and using social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. I even can access these networks on my phone and have notifications sent to me. I read an article in Cheerleader magazine and it was discussing how via text messaging and social networking is causing individuals in society to loose face-to-face interaction. I began to get an interest in this topic and I began to realize how people interact with one another, even me and my friends, using these networks and texting. I don't think how I interact with my peers will change because I don't need my phone and to be on Facebook to have a good time.
